The Spine and Scoliosis Center, originally known as Flynn Orthopaedic Clinic and Flynn Spine and Scoliosis Center became incorporated on February 1, 1990. 

 

The founder, Joseph C. Flynn, Sr., M.D. officially opened on April 2, 1990. Dr. Flynn's practice originated in 1958 with Joseph G. Matthews M.D., Royston Miller, M.D. and Newton Mc Collough, M.D. in the practice of Orthopaedic surgery. On May 15, 1966 Drs. Matthews, Flynn and Richards moved the practice to 1315 South Orange Avenue in Orlando, which later was renamed Matthews Orthopaedic Clinic. After many years of practice and a long history of dedication, Dr Flynn Sr. left Matthew's Orthopaedic Clinic to open his own practice of medicine and in the stewardship of his profession has been visible in the community, and to the leadership in local, state and national medical organizations. Dr. Flynn has long enjoyed the reputation of being a service oriented physician, to which patients and fellow physicians can look for advise and counsel

 

Joseph C. Flynn, Jr., M.D. joined Flynn Orthopaedic Clinic August 1, 1993. Dr. Flynn Jr. training included an internship in General Surgery at Shands Hospital and University of Florida Affiliated hospitals. He completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina in 1992. His residency was followed by a Fellowship in Orthopaedic Spine Reconstructive Surgery at the Arkansas Spine Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. He has completed extensive research in spinal deformity and spinal instrumentation and presented his work at national medical meetings. Dr Flynn's primary interest includes pediatric and adult spinal deformities, as well as degenerative and traumatic disorders of the cervical and lumbar spine.

 

Geoffrey Stewart, M.D. joined Flynn Spine and Scoliosis Center August 1, 1996. Dr. Stewart received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia.  He completed his residency at Tufts University Affiliated Hospital and the Massachusetts General Hospital. He then completed the Maryland Fellowship in Reconstructive Spinal Surgery with Paul McAfee, M.D. in Baltimore, incorporating both Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical spine training.   Dr Stewart specializes in treatment of adult and pediatric spinal disorders. His particular interest is in minimally invasive surgical procedures. He has authored a number of articles on spine surgery and his research has won awards at major scientific meetings.

 

Dr. Javier Placer joined The Spine and Scoliosis Center in 2006. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. His area of specialized medical care includes physical medicine, rehabilitation, pain management, sports medicine, pain relief treatment via injection and electrodiagnostic medicine.  Dr. Placer’s specific services include spinal injections (lumbar epidural, selective nerve root blocks, sacroiliac joint injections, lumbar facet blocks, radiofrequency ablation), motor point blocks/phenol neurolysis, peripheral joint injections, electromyography/nerve conduction studies, botulinum toxin injections and acupuncture.
